The Hanbok Anthology

About

The hanbok anthology is a project with the goal of spreading the beauty of "hanbok", the traditional Korean clothing. We are aiming to collaborate between multiple artists and writers to create pieces that depict the hanbok being worn in both older, more traditional styles and also in a more modern, OOTD fashion.

FAQ

For any questions not answered in this section, feel free to reach out to us via Twitter, CuriousCat or our email! We'll be updating this portion whenever we get a new question!

What is a hanbok?
Hanbok is the traditional two-piece Korean outfit. There are different types - the more formal, 'ceremonial' type, which are worn usually at weddings or a baby's first birthday party. Shamans also wear a special type of formal hanbok. Recently, a more everyday type of hanbok has been popular, which combine the more traditional dress with western-type parts. In our anthology we will include all these types of hanbok, as we would like to show the history and beauty of it.
What is this anthology about?
The Hanbok Anthology (name TBA) will focus on depicting the beauty of the traditional Korean clothing, hanbok, in a variety of different art pieces.
Will this project be digital or physical?
It will be sold in both digital and physical formats, with both digital and merch to go with the zines!
Is this going to be for-profit?
It is going to be for-profit, especially since many artists are having trouble financially. Our final goal is to be able to provide full bundles for all mods/contributors and also compensate them for the work via Paypal. After much discussion, we have decided to donate profits from leftover sales, potentially to an organization for supporting families of Korean comfort women.
Will participants be required to be of Korean heritage?/Will the mods be prioritizing the acceptance of Korean creators over others?
No, and no. From the amount of interest we've been seeing up until now, we are expecting to see a large amount of Korean creators applying, however what we will be looking at during the application process is every applicant's skill, what kind of content they are planning on creating, et cetera! Our main goal, as stressed many times, is to spread the art and beauty of hanbok and Korean culture surrounding it!
Will you be inviting guest artists?
Yes! we have contacted a lot of very talented artists to contribute to our zine as a guest, and full guest intros will be updated on our social media soon!
What language will the writing pieces be in?
Currently we are leaning towards accepting either Korean or English writers, and having a Korean-English translating mod/proofreader read through these so that we can publish each piece in both languages! If need be, the organizer (ppomu) is fluent enough in both languages to also fulfill this role. If the writer wishes to translate their piece personally, we will ask for their proof of proficiencies in both.
Can traditional art pieces be allowed?
Of course! There are many ways you can depict the hanbok in traditional pieces, as long as the scanned image is of a high enough quality, we can definitely accept it.
Is there an age restriction for joining?
This project is set on being completely SFW, but since we are aiming to make this for-profit with the goal of paying (via PayPal) on top of providing a full bundle for each contributor, you will need to be above the age of 18 to recieve monetary compensation. If you are a minor, you will still be provided with a full bundle but your slice of compensation will be put into the pool for other contributors.
What types of characters can we depict in our pieces?
Based on our interest check results, we will be having a section for fanarts of preexisting characters who have a Korean theme (e.g. Ahri from LoL, D.Va from Overwatch, Juri from Street Fighter), but we are trying to feature more original characters.
